Letter J Sounds and Words

J is the tenth letter! J makes a juh sound, like at the start of JUMP, JET, or JELLY. It is the same sound that soft G makes sometimes. Put your teeth close together and push a buzz through โ€” thats J. J is a consonant and shows up in many fun action words.

The Core Idea

Uppercase J looks like a hook or the letter I curved at the bottom. Lowercase j has a dot on top and a long tail like g. J is one of the newer letters โ€” people added it to the alphabet long after the others were already in use.

Words That Start with J

Jump: to leap. Jet: a fast plane. Jelly: a wiggly sweet food. Jacket: a warm coat. Jar: a glass container. Juice: a liquid drink. Jungle: a thick forest. Joy: happiness. Every J word begins with that buzzy juh sound.

Going Deeper

Like lowercase g and p, lowercase j has a descender โ€” a tail that hangs below the baseline. Lowercase j is also the only letter besides i that has a dot on top. That makes j the cousin of i!

The J Sound Hiding in G Words

The juh sound is not always spelled with J! Sometimes G makes the same sound. GIANT, GEM, GYM, GINGER, GENERAL all start with G but say juh โ€” called soft G. The rule: G is soft (says juh) before E, I, or Y. Before A, O, U it is hard (says guh): GOAT, GAS, GUM. So when you see a G word, check what vowel comes next to guess the sound. J is always juh โ€” it never changes. G is the tricky one. This same pattern shows up with C (soft C says /s/ before E, I, Y; hard C says /k/ before A, O, U).
