Letter A Sounds and Words

A is the very first letter of the alphabet! A is a vowel, which means it makes special sounds that our mouths open up for. The letter A makes two common sounds: short A (like in CAT, HAT, MAT) and long A (like in CAKE, MAKE, RAIN). A starts many everyday words: apple, ant, arm, a

B is the second letter of the alphabet! B makes a buh sound, like at the start of BALL, BOY, or BIG. Put your lips together lightly and pop them open — thats the B sound! B is a consonant, not a vowel, and it shows up at the start of lots of fun words.

Letter C Sounds and Words

C is a tricky letter with two sounds! Most of the time C says kuh (hard C, like in CAT, COW, CUP). But sometimes C says sss (soft C, like in CITY, CENT, CIRCLE). When C is followed by E, I, or Y, it usually sounds like sss.

D is the fourth letter of the alphabet! D makes a duh sound, like at the start of DOG, DUCK, or DAY. Put the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth and drop it quickly — thats the D sound! D is a consonant and it starts many playful words.

E is the fifth letter and a vowel! E has two sounds: short E (like in BED, RED, PEN) and long E (like in TREE, SEE, BEE). Long E sounds like the name of the letter itself: eeee. Short E is more like eh, with your mouth slightly open.

F is the sixth letter! F makes a fff sound, like at the start of FISH, FUN, or FROG. Put your top teeth on your bottom lip and blow air softly — thats F. It feels a lot like a soft whistle. F is a consonant and starts many quick, fun words.

G is the seventh letter and it has two sounds! Hard G says guh (like in GO, GAME, GARDEN). Soft G says juh (like in GIANT, GYM, GIRAFFE). Like C, the vowel right after G is the clue: a/o/u = hard G, e/i/y = usually soft G.

H is the eighth letter! H makes a huh sound, like a soft breath out. Put your hand in front of your mouth and say HAT — you feel air on your palm. HAT. HEN. HOUSE. HAPPY. H is a consonant and makes a quiet breathy sound.
