Before Farming: Always on the Move
Before about 11,000 years ago, most people were hunter-gatherers. They moved often, following herds of animals and searching for wild fruits, nuts, and seeds. Families carried everything they owned with them, and they rarely built homes meant to last, because they knew they would be moving again soon.
The First Farmers
In the Fertile Crescent, people began planting wheat and barley on purpose instead of only gathering wild grains. They also began keeping goats and sheep close by instead of only hunting them in the wild. Because they no longer had to keep moving to find food, these early farmers could finally build houses meant to stay in one place.
Archaeologists have found one of the oldest known farming villages, called Catalhoyuk, in modern-day Turkey. People lived there over 9,000 years ago in mudbrick houses built so close together that they walked across the rooftops and climbed down ladders through holes in the ceiling to get inside.
Why Villages Began to Grow
Farming meant extra food, which meant not everyone had to search for food all day long. Some people could spend their time making pottery, weaving cloth, or building tools instead. Over hundreds of years, these small groups of houses slowly grew into larger villages, and eventually into towns.
