Finding Water in the Wild

WATER is your second-highest survival priority (after shelter in extreme weather). You can survive ~3 days without it. Dehydration causes confusion, weakness, and death. In most environments, water is findable. The trick is finding CLEAN water — or knowing how to make UNCLEAN water safe. Water with bacteria, parasites, or chemicals can sicken you fast (giardia, cryptosporidium, etc.) — making your situation much worse.

Where to find water. STREAMS, RIVERS, LAKES (most accessible — but rarely safe to drink untreated). DEW: collect on grass with a cloth in early morning. RAIN: collect in any container. SNOW: melt before drinking (don't eat raw — chills you). DRY CREEK beds: dig a shallow hole, water often seeps in. PLANTS: some have drinkable sap (birch trees). GROUNDWATER: dig at the lowest spots in valleys. AVOID: stagnant pools (algae toxins), salt water, anything with strange colors or smells.

You find a clear-looking mountain stream. Should you drink directly from it?

Purification methods. BOILING (1 minute at sea level, longer at altitude — kills all pathogens). FILTERING (LifeStraw, Sawyer Squeeze, etc. — removes bacteria and parasites; not always viruses). CHEMICAL (iodine, chlorine tablets — wait 30 min). UV (SteriPen — works in clear water). SOLAR (clear bottle in sun for 6+ hours kills many pathogens). Multiple methods give layered safety. Carry purification gear in any backcountry pack.

Hydration Plan

Even on day hikes, carry MORE water than you think you need (1 liter per 2 hours minimum). Carry a method to purify more. Dehydration kills more day-hikers than dramatic emergencies.

Water is precious. Knowing where to find it AND how to make it safe is one of survival's most important skills.
