Sticks and Stones: The First Tools People Used to Stay Safe
A long, long time ago โ before metal, before cars, before even farms โ people found a sharp rock and tied it to a stick. That simple idea, a rock plus a stick, was one of the very first tools humans ever made to hunt for food and to stay safe.

Why People Needed Tools
Long ago, people did not have grocery stores. To eat, they had to hunt animals or find plants growing in the wild. But animals are fast, and some are big and strong! People are not the fastest or the strongest animals around, so early humans used their smart brains to build tools that could do what their bodies could not.
A rock that has been chipped and shaped to have a sharp edge is called a stone tool. Scientists have found stone tools that are over 2 million years old!
The First Spear
One of the earliest tools was the spear: a long stick with a sharp point. At first, people just sharpened the tip of a wooden stick in a fire to make it hard. Later, people learned to chip a rock into a sharp point and tie it tightly onto the end of the stick using strips of animal skin or plant fibers. This let hunters throw or thrust from farther away, instead of needing to get dangerously close to an animal.
Early people usually hunted in groups, not alone. A group carrying spears could safely hunt animals much bigger than any single person, by working together and using their tools as a team.
Tools Kept Changing
Over thousands and thousands of years, people kept improving their tools. Spears got sharper points. People invented the bow and arrow, which could hit a target from even farther away. Every new tool made hunting a little safer and food a little easier to find.

Design Your Own Early Tool
Draw a picture of a spear made from a stick and a sharp stone tip. Label three parts of your drawing: the wooden stick, the sharp stone point, and the strips used to tie them together. Then write one sentence explaining what your tool would help someone do. Deliverable: one labeled drawing plus one sentence.
