Over one billion people around the world wear glasses. That is more than one in every eight people on Earth! Some wear them to see far away clearly, some to see things close up, and some to help with both. Glasses, hearing aids, and tools like them are special inventions. They help our bodies do something they find hard to do on their own. Scientists and doctors call these tools assistive technology โ technology that assists, or helps, us.

Why Do Some Eyes Need Help?
Your eye works like a camera. Light comes in through the front (the lens) and makes a picture on the back (the retina). When everything works just right, the picture is clear and sharp. But sometimes the eye is a little too long or a little too short. If the eye is too long, far-away things look blurry โ this is called being nearsighted. If the eye is too short, close-up things look blurry โ this is called being farsighted. Glasses fix this! The special curved glass in the lenses bends light before it enters the eye, so the picture lands in just the right spot on the retina and everything looks sharp and clear.
The very first glasses were invented around the year 1286 in Italy! They were called reading stones โ glass pebbles that made words on a page look bigger. Today's glasses use precision-crafted lenses that can be made thinner than a credit card.
How Do Hearing Aids Help?
Hearing aids are tiny devices that fit in or behind your ear. They work like miniature microphones and speakers all in one. Here is how: a small microphone picks up sounds from around you. A tiny computer chip makes those sounds louder. A small speaker sends the louder sounds into your ear canal, where your eardrum can feel them. Some people have a cochlear implant instead of a hearing aid. This is a small device that goes inside the ear and sends signals directly to the hearing nerve โ it can help people who cannot hear at all!

Glasses and hearing aids are just two examples of tools that help our bodies. There are many more! Prosthetic legs and arms can help people who were born without a limb or who lost one in an accident. Some prosthetics are so advanced they can respond to signals from muscles โ the person just moves their arm and the prosthetic arm moves with it! Wheelchairs and scooters help people move around when their legs make walking difficult. Canes help people balance. These tools mean people can go to school, work, play sports, and explore the world.

1. Think about something that can be hard for some people to do โ maybe seeing in the dark, hearing very quiet sounds, or moving around outside. 2. Draw and design a made-up body helper that could fix this problem. 3. Label three parts of your invention and write one sentence about what each part does. 4. Share your design with a classmate or family member. Tell them: Who would this help? How does it work? 5.
