A telephone lets you talk to your grandma even if she lives 1,000 miles away. A hundred years ago, sending her a letter could take a whole week to arrive! Computers and tablets let us read stories, watch videos, and solve math problems. Technology like this is called communication technology, because it helps people share ideas.

A smoke detector beeps loudly if it senses fire, waking people up before it's too late. A stethoscope lets a doctor listen to your heartbeat to make sure it sounds healthy. Even a simple seatbelt is technology — a tool designed to keep you safe in a car.
