Social Movements

SOCIAL MOVEMENTS are organized efforts by groups of people to bring about (or resist) social change. Examples: civil rights movement, women's suffrage, labor unions, environmental movement, LGBTQ+ rights, climate activism, disability rights. Movements have shaped most of modern society โ€” voting rights, child labor laws, weekends, civil rights, environmental protections all came from movements. Sociology studies WHY some succeed, why others fail, and how they work.

Stages and elements. EMERGENCE: discontent crystallizes around an issue. COALESCENCE: leaders emerge, organizations form, identity solidifies. INSTITUTIONALIZATION: formal structures, professional staff. DECLINE: success, repression, or loss of momentum. Successful movements typically have: COMPELLING GRIEVANCES, RESOURCES (people, money, networks), POLITICAL OPPORTUNITIES (cracks in the system), FRAMING (how the message resonates), LEADERSHIP, and TACTICS (protests, strikes, lawsuits, electoral pressure).

Why have most major social changes (civil rights, voting rights, environmental protections) come through SOCIAL MOVEMENTS rather than individual leaders alone?

Modern movements. CIVIL RIGHTS movement (1955-1968): organized boycotts, marches, civil disobedience. ENVIRONMENTAL movement (Earth Day, EPA, Paris Agreement). MARRIAGE EQUALITY (rapid cultural shift 2000-2015). #METOO (2017+): rapid mobilization through social media. CLIMATE STRIKES (Greta Thunberg, 2018+): youth-led global movement. BLACK LIVES MATTER (2013+). Each shows different paths and outcomes. Some movements achieve their goals; others fail or backfire. Sociologists study the patterns.

Pick a Movement

Pick a movement (current or historical). Research: what was the issue? Who organized? What tactics? What worked? Outcomes? Movements are complex โ€” much more than a few iconic moments. Their actual mechanics teach civic action.

Social movements are how ordinary people change society. Studying them shows that change is possible โ€” and how to make it happen.
