My Community: Words That Describe Where We Live

Right now, around 8 billion people live on Earth — and every single one of them lives in a community. Your community is the place where you live, learn, and play with others. Learning the words that describe your community helps you understand how your world is put together and where you fit in it.

A community is a group of people who live near each other and share the same neighborhood, town, or city. Your home is part of a community. So is your school! Communities can be very small, like a tiny village with 50 people, or enormous, like a city with millions of people all living, working, and sharing the same place. Every community has things people share: Homes: places where people live and sleep Schools: places where children learn new things Stores: places to buy food and supplies Roads: paths that connect one place to another Parks: outdoor spaces where people can rest and play The people in a community share these spaces and help each other every day.

Communities come in three main types: City (Urban): A city is a big, busy community with lots of tall buildings, many people, and places close together. New York, Chicago, and Houston are cities. You can often walk or take a bus to get where you need to go. Suburb: A suburb is a smaller community near a big city. Homes have yards and are spread out more. Many people drive cars to get to jobs or schools in the nearby city. Suburbs are quieter and less crowded than cities. Rural: A rural area is the countryside — small towns, farms, and wide-open land with fewer people. Stores and schools might be far away, and most people need a car or truck to get around.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a landmark in San Francisco. Map: A drawing that shows where places are from above, like a bird looking down. Maps help us find our way. Neighbor: A person who lives near you. You and your neighbor share the same community. Government: The people who make rules for a community to keep it safe and organized. Your town or city has a local government. Service: Something done to help people in the community. Collecting garbage and fixing roads are services.

Communities work because people help each other! Some helpers have special jobs: Firefighters: Put out fires and rescue people who are hurt or in danger Police officers: Keep the community safe and help during emergencies Doctors and nurses: Take care of people when they are sick or hurt Teachers: Help children learn new skills every day Sanitation workers: Pick up garbage so streets and neighborhoods stay clean Each of these helpers is an important part of your community.
