What Makes a Community? Meeting Our Neighbors and Helpers

Look outside your window. Maybe you see a mail carrier walking up the street, or a school bus stopping to pick up your friends. All of these people and places together make something special: your community!

What a community is. Who some of the helpers are that keep a community safe and healthy. How to be a good neighbor yourself.

A community is a group of people who live, work, and play in the same place. It can be a small street, a whole neighborhood, or a big city. In a community, people help each other and share spaces like parks, schools, and stores.

Firefighters put out fires and help in emergencies. Police officers help keep streets safe and help people who are lost or in trouble. Doctors and nurses help us stay healthy and take care of us when we are sick. Teachers help us learn new things every single day. Every one of these helpers is part of your community.

You can help your community too! You can say hello to your neighbors, share your toys or snacks, help carry in groceries, or pick up litter in the park. Small kind actions make a community a happier place for everyone.

A community on a farm looks different from a community in a big city. A farm community might have fewer people and lots of open fields. A city community might have tall buildings and busy sidewalks. But in both places, people still help each other, just like in your community.
