What Makes a Community? People Helping People
This morning, someone woke up early to bake the bread you might eat for breakfast. Someone else drove a truck so the grocery store had milk on the shelf. A firefighter checked their truck in case someone needs help today. None of these people know your name, but they are all part of your community — a group of people who live near each other and help each other, even without being asked.

What Is a Community?
A community is any group of people who live, work, or learn near each other and depend on one another. Your classroom is a small community. Your neighborhood is a bigger one. Your whole town or city is even bigger. In every one of these communities, people have different jobs, but they all work together so that everyone has what they need — food, safety, school, and fun.
Community Helpers All Around You
Look closely at your town and you'll spot dozens of community helpers. A librarian helps you find the perfect book. A mail carrier walks miles every day so letters and packages reach the right house. A doctor or nurse helps your body heal when you are sick. A crossing guard makes sure you get across the street safely on the way to school. Every one of these jobs exists because one person alone cannot do everything a community needs.
Some towns are so small that one person holds several community jobs at once — the same person might be the town's mayor, its only shopkeeper, and a volunteer firefighter, all in one week!
Rules Help Communities Work
Communities also need rules so that everyone can live together safely. A rule like 'stop at a red light' protects both drivers and people walking. A rule like 'raise your hand before you speak' helps a classroom community share ideas without everyone talking at once. Rules are not there to make life boring — they are a community's way of agreeing on how to take care of each other.

Map Your Community Helpers
Draw a simple map of your neighborhood or town from memory — your school, your home, and a few other places you visit. On the map, draw or write the name of one community helper who works at each place (a teacher at school, a cashier at the store, a mail carrier on your street).
