Samarkand: The Sparkling City Where the Silk Road Met
Imagine walking for three months across deserts and mountains just to reach one city. Thousands of traders did exactly that — because at the very center of the ancient Silk Road sat Samarkand, the most dazzling marketplace on earth. Merchants arrived from China, India, Persia, and Rome, all carrying treasures to swap in its bustling bazaars.

Where in the World Is Samarkand?
Samarkand is in a country called Uzbekistan, right in the heart of Central Asia. The Silk Road was not one single path — it was a giant web of trails stretching more than 7,000 miles from China all the way to Europe. Samarkand sat almost exactly in the middle of this web. Travelers going east to west AND travelers going north to south all passed through it. That made it the biggest and busiest meeting place on the whole Silk Road!
People have lived in Samarkand for at least 2,750 years. It was already ancient when the pyramids of Egypt were just 2,000 years old. Today it is still a real city with more than 500,000 people!
What Was Sold in Samarkand's Markets?
Samarkand's bazaars were like a magical shopping mall full of things from far-away lands. From CHINA: silky cloth so soft it felt like water, and brand-new paper. From INDIA: pepper, cinnamon, and bright dyes for coloring fabric. From PERSIA: sparkling glassware and silver jewelry. From CENTRAL ASIA: powerful horses and thick warm furs. Traders swapped these goods so everyone could take home something they could not make themselves. Silk traded well in Rome. Spices traded well in China. Everybody won!
Timur's Blue Towers
About 600 years ago a great ruler named Timur (called Tamerlane in Europe) chose Samarkand as his capital. He wanted it to be the most magnificent city on earth. Timur brought artists and builders from every corner of his empire and told them to cover every mosque and palace with gleaming tiles. The tiles were blue, turquoise, and gold — when the morning sun hit them, the whole city shimmered. The most famous spot, the Registan plaza, had three towering arched gateways decorated with millions of tiny tile pieces. Visitors said you could see it glowing from miles away!

1. Fold a sheet of paper in half to make a card. 2. On the FRONT, draw a merchant traveling the Silk Road — maybe riding a camel or a horse. 3. On the BACK, draw or write three things your merchant is carrying: one from China, one from India, one from Persia. 4. Add a tiny star on a simple map to show where Samarkand is (ask a helper to draw a rough outline of Asia if you need one). 5. Share your card with a friend or family member and explain what each good is and where it came from!
