Have you ever seen a little red heart on a card, a sticker, or even on your shoe? That shape doesn't look like a real heart inside your body — but everyone who sees it knows exactly what it means: love! This is one of the coolest tricks humans use, and it's called a SYMBOL.

What Is a Symbol?
A symbol is a picture, shape, or object that stands for an idea instead of looking exactly like it. A red heart doesn't look like the heart beating inside your chest — it's a simple curvy shape. But hundreds of years ago, people started drawing that curvy shape to mean 'love,' and now almost everyone in the world understands it the same way, even without saying a single word. That's the amazing part about symbols: they let us share big feelings and ideas using something small and simple.
Symbols Are All Around You
Once you start looking, you'll see symbols everywhere. A red octagon, an eight-sided shape, on the street means STOP — not because the shape looks like the word 'stop,' but because everyone agreed it would mean that. A yellow smiley face means happy. A thumbs-up means 'good job' or 'yes.' Even letters are symbols — the letter 'A' doesn't look like the sound it makes, we just all agreed it would stand for that sound!
