Tiny Bumper Cars: How Atoms Bump and Move

Roll two marbles at each other on a table. Clack! They bump and bounce off in new directions. Did you know everything around you โ€” the air you breathe, the water in your cup, even your own hand โ€” is made of tiny, tiny bits called atoms? They are so small that a single drop of water holds more atoms than there are stars in the sky. And just like marbles, they are always bumping into each other!

Everything Is Made of Tiny Bits

Atoms are so small you would need a very powerful microscope to see even one. Your pencil, your lunch, the puddle on the sidewalk โ€” all of it is built from atoms, like a giant tower built from millions of tiny blocks. Scientists cannot see atoms with their eyes, but they know atoms are there because of how things act, like how a marble bumps another marble.

Bump, Bounce, Move

Atoms never sit perfectly still. They wiggle, bump, and bounce off each other all the time, just like marbles rolling across a table and smacking into one another. In something solid, like a rock, the atoms bump but stay close together, like marbles packed tight in a box. In something like air, the atoms zoom around and bump far apart, like marbles bouncing all over a huge room.

Try This at Home

Roll two marbles straight at each other on a smooth floor. Watch what happens when they collide โ€” that bump-and-bounce is exactly what atoms do, just too small to see!

Hot and Cold Change the Bumps

When something gets hot, its atoms move faster and bump into each other harder and more often โ€” like marbles rolled with a strong flick. When something gets cold, the atoms slow down and bump gently, like marbles barely nudged. That is part of why an ice cube (cold, slow atoms) feels so different from steam (hot, fast atoms) even though both are made of the very same water atoms!

Get two or more marbles (or bouncy balls) and a smooth, flat surface. Roll one marble gently into another and watch what happens, then roll it hard and watch again. Draw two pictures: one showing the marbles 'before' they bump and one showing them 'after.' Underneath, write one sentence about how a gentle roll compares to a hard roll โ€” this is just like slow, cold atoms compared to fast, hot atoms!
