Tapping and Swiping — Touch Gestures
Phones don't use a mouse — they use TOUCH GESTURES. Different gestures mean different things. The app responds to each one differently. Knowing the common gestures (and what they usually do) helps you use any new app fast.
Common gestures. TAP: select or activate (like a click). DOUBLE-TAP: zoom or focus (varies by app). LONG-PRESS: open a menu or details. SWIPE LEFT/RIGHT: switch screens, delete (in many apps). SWIPE UP: send, scroll. SWIPE DOWN: refresh, pull notification panel. PINCH: zoom out (or in if reversed). DRAG: move an item to a new position.
In an email app, you swipe RIGHT on a message and it gets archived. What was the gesture for?
Designers MUST teach gestures or use familiar ones. New users don't know hidden gestures unless someone shows them. That's why first-time tutorials exist. Common rule: if a gesture isn't obvious, also provide a button alternative. Power users love gestures; new users prefer buttons.
Gesture Hunt
In your favorite app, find 3 different gestures it supports. (Try long-press, swipe, pinch.) What does each one do? Now switch to a different app — do the same gestures do the same things?
Touch is the language of mobile. The more fluent you are, the faster you can use any app — and the more thoughtful you'll be about designing your own.
