What Is a Castle? A Stone Home Built to Keep People Safe

Imagine a house made all of stone, with walls so thick you could not push them over. It has a tall tower you can climb, a big gate, and even a river of water going all the way around it! That is a castle. Windsor Castle in England is real, and people have lived in it for more than 900 years. A queen still visits it today. Long ago, a family built a castle so they could stay safe when trouble came.

What You'll Learn

1. What a castle is and why people built one. 2. The names of a castle's big parts, like the wall and the tower. 3. How a castle helped keep people safe.

A Castle Is a Strong Home

A castle is a very big, very strong home. Long ago there were no police to call. If bad people came to take a family's food or land, the family needed a safe place to hide. So they built with stone, not sticks. Stone does not burn, and it is too heavy to knock down. A castle could keep a whole village safe inside.

Look for the Flag

Many castles flew a colored flag at the top of the tallest tower. When you saw the flag, you knew the important family was home!

The Parts of a Castle

A castle has special parts, and each one has a job: The WALL is tall and made of stone. It keeps people out. The TOWER is the tallest part. Guards climb up to look far away. The GATE is the big door. It can shut tight and lock. The MOAT is a ring of water around the castle. It is hard to cross, so it keeps enemies away.

Match each castle part to its job.

Why did people build castles out of stone instead of sticks?

Why Build a Castle?

A castle was like a giant safe box for people. When an enemy came, the family, the workers, and even the farm animals could all run inside. Then the guards shut the big gate. Inside the castle there was food stored up, water from a deep well, and a warm fire. People could stay safe inside for a long time until the danger went away.

Build Your Own Castle

Use blocks, boxes, or clay to build a small castle. Give it these four parts: a WALL, one tall TOWER, a GATE that opens, and a MOAT (use a blue paper or a ring of blue crayon for the water). Then draw a picture of your castle and label each part with its name. Show a grown-up and tell them the job of each part!
