Tying My Shoes
Tying your own shoes is a BIG kid skill. Once you learn it, you can do it forever! The trick is practice — most kids need to try many times before it works smoothly. Don't give up!
BUNNY EAR METHOD. Step 1: cross the laces and pull tight (an X knot). Step 2: make a "bunny ear" loop with each lace. Step 3: cross the two ears, just like the X. Step 4: tuck one ear under and pull both tight. Two bunny ears = a bow! Practice while sitting down with your shoe in front of you.
When your bow comes loose during the day, what should you do?
If your shoes keep coming untied, try a DOUBLE KNOT — after the first bow, take the two loops and tie them just like the original laces. Or try a "secure" method: cross the laces, wrap once more, then make a bow. These hold tighter.
Daily Practice
Practice tying your shoes 3 times every day for a week. Time yourself! Do it slower at first, then faster. Soon you can do it without thinking.
Tying your own shoes is a tiny step toward being independent. Once you can do this, you can take care of yourself a little more every day. You're growing up!
