Setting the Table

SETTING THE TABLE means putting plates, cups, and silverware in the right spots before a meal. It's a small chore — but it makes meals feel special. Plus, it's a great way to help your family.

Basic placement. The PLATE goes in the middle. The FORK goes on the LEFT side. The KNIFE goes on the RIGHT (with the sharp side facing the plate). The SPOON goes to the right of the knife. The CUP goes above the knife. Napkin can go under the fork OR on the plate. Tip: "Fork" has 4 letters and "left" has 4 letters. "Knife," "spoon," and "right" all have 5. That helps you remember!

Which side does the FORK go on?

Different meals need different things. Soup? Add a spoon. Steak? Add a sharp knife. Salad? Add a small fork OR a salad fork (a tiny one). Setting a fancy table just means thinking ahead about what each dish needs.

Set Tonight's Table

Tonight before dinner, set the whole table for your family. Plate in the middle, fork on the left, knife and spoon on the right, cup above the knife. Be proud — you helped!

Setting the table is a small thing that makes a big difference. It shows you care about the meal AND the people eating it. Bonus: it's a useful skill at fancy dinners forever.
