Counting to 10: One More Each Time
Hold up your two hands. Did you know you have exactly 10 fingers? That means you already carry a counting tool everywhere you go! Today we count from 1 all the way to 10, one number at a time.

Counting One by One
When we count, we say one number for each object we touch. If you have 3 apples on the table, you point to the first apple and say 'one,' the second apple and say 'two,' the third apple and say 'three.' Each object gets exactly one number - never two numbers for the same apple!
What Comes Next?
Numbers go in a special order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Each number is 'one more' than the number before it. So after 5 comes 6, because 6 is one more than 5. After 9 comes 10!
Hold up one finger for 1, two fingers for 2, all the way up to 10 fingers for 10. Your hands help you see the numbers, not just say them.
Counting Groups Around You
You can count almost anything: buttons on a shirt, stairs going up to your room, or crayons in a box. Try counting the windows in one room. Point to each window and say the number out loud so you don't count the same window twice.

Count Your Snack
Get a small snack like crackers or grapes (up to 10 pieces). Line them up in a row. Touch each one and count out loud from 1 to however many you have. Then tell a grown-up the total number. Draw the row of snacks and write the total number next to your drawing.
