Reading the Signs: Words We See Every Day
Did you know you can already read some words? A big red sign that says STOP. The word EXIT glowing above a door. The name on your favorite cereal box. Words are all around us - on signs, boxes, and buttons. This is called reading the world, and you do it every single day!

The STOP Sign
The STOP sign is red and has eight sides. It says one strong word: STOP. Cars stop. Bikes stop. Even walkers look both ways. The word STOP starts with the letter S - like snake, sss! When you see that red sign, you can read it: S-T-O-P, STOP!
Look at the FIRST letter of a word to help you guess it. STOP starts with S. EXIT starts with E. OPEN starts with O. The first letter is like a little hint!
Signs on Doors
Doors talk to us with words! A green sign that says OPEN means you can go in. A sign that says EXIT shows the way out. PUSH means push the door. PULL means pull it toward you. These words help you know exactly what to do.
Words on Boxes and Cans
Your kitchen is full of words too! The MILK carton says milk. The cereal box has its name in big letters. When you help a grown-up shop, you can find things by their words and pictures. Reading the world helps you help your family!
