Helping After Storms

In 2017, a huge storm called Hurricane Maria hit an island called Puerto Rico. The wind knocked down power lines and blew the roofs off houses. Families needed food, clean water, and blankets right away. Big planes and ships came from far-away countries to bring help. This is called disaster relief, and it happens all over the world when a big storm, earthquake, or flood hurts a community.

A big storm can break houses, knock down power lines, and block roads with fallen trees. Without power, refrigerators stop working and lights go out. Many different helpers show up after a storm. The Red Cross sends volunteers with food, water, and first aid kits. The United Nations, a group made up of almost every country in the world, helps organize big relief efforts. Sometimes soldiers from nearby countries fly in supplies using large cargo planes. Neighbors and local firefighters are often the very first helpers, even before anyone else arrives.

Countries help each other after disasters because people everywhere want to be safe, fed, and cared for. When one country sends help to another, it also builds friendship between the two countries. This kind of teamwork between nations is a big part of what International Relations is all about — people from different countries working together to solve big problems.
