Be Safe Around Water

Splash! Pools, lakes, tubs, and even the ocean are so much fun. But water is also strong, and it does not know if you can swim. That is why every kid needs a water safety buddy plan before they ever jump in!

What You'll Learn

- Why you always need a grown-up watching when you're near water - What a life jacket does and when to wear one - Three water safety rules to remember every time - What to do if you or a friend gets into trouble in water

Rule 1: Never Swim Alone

Always swim with a buddy, and always have a grown-up watching who is not busy on a phone or a book. This grown-up is called a water watcher. Even great swimmers can get tired or get a cramp, so having someone watching keeps everyone safer.

Rule 2: Ask Before You Go In

Pools, lakes, and the ocean can look calm but have surprises, like a sudden drop-off, a slippery rock, or a strong current pulling you away from shore. Always ask a grown-up if it's okay and where it's safe to swim before you get in.

Rule 3: Wear Your Life Jacket On Boats and in Open Water

A life jacket is not just for kids who can't swim yet. On a boat, in a lake, or in the ocean, a properly fitted life jacket helps you float even if you get tired or the water gets rough. It should fit snugly, not slide up over your chin when someone lifts it from the shoulders.

Make a Water Safety Poster

Draw a poster with three sections: 'Always have a water watcher,' 'Wear a life jacket in open water,' and 'Yell for help, don't jump in.' Use pictures, not just words. Deliverable: a finished poster you can hang near your home's pool, tub, or front door as a reminder.
