Shapes, Colors, and Fonts: The Secret Words of Graphic Design

Look at a stop sign. It is red, shaped like an octagon (8 sides!), and has big white letters. Someone chose EVERY one of those things on purpose so you would notice it fast and know exactly what to do. That someone is called a graphic designer, and today you get to learn their secret words!

What You'll Learn

- The word 'logo' and what makes a good one - Why designers pick colors on purpose, not by accident - The word 'font' and how letters can look different - How to design your own simple logo

Logo: A Picture That Means a Whole Thing

A logo is a small picture or symbol that stands for something bigger, like a school, a team, or a store. Think about a apple with a bite out of it โ€” that simple shape means a giant computer company to millions of people! Good logos are simple enough that you could draw them from memory.

Colors Send Messages Too

Red often means STOP, danger, or excitement โ€” that's why stop signs and fire trucks use it. Green often means GO or nature, like the green light that tells cars to drive. Yellow often means CAUTION, like a school bus or a caution sign. Designers pick colors to help your brain understand a message even before you read any words!

Did You Know?

Fire trucks in some cities are painted bright yellow-green instead of red, because studies found firefighters can see that color better at night and in fog โ€” proving color choices can even be about safety, not just looks!

Fonts: Letters Have Personalities

A font is a specific style that letters are drawn in. Some fonts look bouncy and fun, like they belong on a birthday card. Some fonts look sharp and serious, like they belong on a news website. Designers pick fonts the same way they pick colors โ€” on purpose, to match the feeling they want you to have.

Design Your Own Logo

Draw a logo for something about YOU โ€” your name, your family, or your favorite hobby. Use only 2 colors and one simple shape (circle, square, triangle, or star). Show it to a friend or family member and see if they can guess what it means without you explaining. Then write one sentence about why you picked those colors.
