Animals Need Homes

Every animal — from a tiny beetle to a huge elephant — needs a HOME. Scientists call an animal's home its HABITAT. A habitat gives the animal everything it needs to live: FOOD, WATER, SHELTER, and SPACE. Without these four things, animals cannot survive.

Different Animals, Different Homes

- **Fish** need WATER — oceans, rivers, lakes.\n- **Polar bears** need ICE and snow.\n- **Camels** need DRY deserts.\n- **Monkeys** need TREES in rainforests.\n- **Earthworms** need MOIST soil.\n\nEach animal is perfectly built for its special habitat. A polar bear could not live in the desert!

What Animals Need From Their Home

Every habitat gives animals 4 things:\n\n1. **FOOD** — plants or other animals to eat\n2. **WATER** — to drink\n3. **SHELTER** — places to hide from weather and danger\n4. **SPACE** — room to live, move, and raise babies\n\nIf any of the 4 is missing, animals cannot survive there.

What are the 4 things every animal needs from its habitat?

When Humans Change Habitats

When humans build cities, roads, or farms, animal habitats sometimes disappear. This is called HABITAT LOSS. It is the #1 reason animals become endangered.\n\nBut humans can also HELP:\n- Create protected national parks\n- Plant trees\n- Build bridges for animals over highways\n- Clean up rivers and oceans\n- Build nest boxes for birds\n\nKids can help too — start with your own backyard!

🎯

Build a Bug Hotel

1. Gather: twigs, dry leaves, pinecones, bark.\n2. Find an empty jar, can, or box.\n3. Fill it with these natural materials.\n4. Place it in your garden or backyard.\n5. Check it every 2 weeks — insects may move in!\n6. You just built a tiny habitat.

🎯

Habitat Match

Match each animal to its habitat:\n\n1. Polar bear — ?\n2. Lion — ?\n3. Frog — ?\n4. Camel — ?\n5. Owl — ?\n\nAnswers: Arctic ice, African savanna, pond, desert, forest.\n\nBonus: draw the best habitat for each!

Why Habitats Matter

When we protect habitats, we protect ANIMALS. When we lose habitats, we lose animals — sometimes FOREVER. Every kid who plants a flower, keeps the beach clean, or makes a bug hotel is helping the earth's incredible animals keep their homes.
