My Feelings Are OK

EVERYONE has feelings. Happy, sad, mad, scared, excited, proud — all of them. Feelings are like signals from inside you. They tell you what matters. There are NO BAD feelings. Even feelings that don't feel good — like sadness or anger — are OK. They are part of being human.

Sometimes people say things like "Don't cry!" or "Don't be mad!" But those feelings will not just disappear. The trick is to NOTICE the feeling first ("I feel sad"), then figure out what to DO with it (ask for a hug, take a deep breath, talk to someone). Both parts matter.

You feel really mad because your friend won't share. Which is the BEST thing to do?

Some feelings come fast and big. They can feel like a wave that wants to wash over you. When that happens, try TAKING DEEP BREATHS. Or COUNT to 10. Or find a SAFE PERSON (parent, teacher, friend) and tell them what you're feeling. Big feelings always pass — they never last forever.

Feelings Check-In

Three times today, stop and ask: "What am I feeling right now?" Use one word: happy, sad, mad, calm, tired, excited. Notice that feelings change throughout the day — and that's normal!

Knowing your feelings — and that ALL of them are OK — is one of the biggest gifts you can give yourself. You will use this skill every day of your life.
