Perfect Toast — Mastering the Basics
TOAST is one of the simplest cooked foods — but making GREAT toast teaches real cooking lessons. Heat changes bread's color, crunch, and flavor. Different breads need different times. Different people like different "doneness." Mastering toast = mastering attention.
How. Place 1 or 2 slices in a TOASTER. Choose a HEAT setting (most toasters go from 1–10; 4 or 5 is medium for most breads). Press the lever down. Wait until it pops up. Toast is done. (For a TOASTER OVEN: similar, but watch closely — they often run hotter.) For thicker bread (sourdough, bagels), use a higher setting or a longer time.
Your toast came out too pale and soft. What should you do next time?
Toast toppings. BUTTER (melts in beautifully). JAM or HONEY (sweet). PEANUT OR ALMOND BUTTER (protein + crunch). AVOCADO (smashed, with salt, pepper, lemon). EGG (over toast or sandwich). CHEESE (melt-it style). The same humble toast becomes hundreds of breakfasts.
Toast Test
With permission, make 3 pieces of toast at different settings (low, medium, high). Note color and texture. Which is YOUR favorite? Now you know your toaster.
Mastering simple things is how chefs become great. Toast teaches: heat, timing, attention. The same skills apply to everything you'll ever cook.
