Triangles Are Strong: Why Bridges Use Triangle Shapes

Push on a Square, and It Wobbles
Imagine four popsicle sticks connected at their corners to make a square. Now push gently on one side. What happens? The whole square leans over into a slanted shape called a parallelogram -- because the corners can swing like hinges. Now imagine three popsicle sticks connected to make a triangle. Push on it the same way. Nothing happens! The triangle cannot change shape unless you actually break one of the sticks or bend it. That's because a triangle has no "floppy" corner that can swing -- every side locks the others in place.
This idea is called triangulation, and engineers have used it in building designs for thousands of years, including in ancient Roman bridges that are still standing today.
Real Bridges Built From Triangles
Look closely at a truss bridge -- the kind with a crisscross pattern of metal bars above the road -- and you'll see it's made entirely of connected triangles. The Forth Bridge in Scotland, built in 1890, uses giant steel triangles and is still carrying trains across the water more than 130 years later. Cranes that lift heavy steel beams on construction sites also use triangle patterns in their long arms, because a triangle shape can hold heavy weight without bending or collapsing.
Why This Matters for Builders
Civil engineers -- the people who design roads, bridges, and buildings -- choose triangle shapes whenever a structure needs to hold weight without shifting or collapsing. Squares and rectangles are still useful (like for rooms and windows), but wherever real strength is needed, you'll almost always find a hidden triangle holding things together.
Triangulation = using triangle shapes to make a structure rigid and strong. Truss = a framework of triangles used to support a bridge or roof.

Popsicle Stick Strength Test
With a grown-up, gather popsicle sticks (or straws) and brass fasteners or tape to connect them at the corners. Build one square shape and one triangle shape. Gently push on the side of each and observe what happens. Write down or draw what you saw, and explain in 2-3 sentences why the triangle held its shape while the square did not, using the word 'triangulation.'
