Addition Within 10

Addition means putting groups TOGETHER to find out how many in all. The plus sign (+) means ADD.

Core Concept

When we write 3 + 2 = 5, we are saying 3 things and 2 more things make 5 things altogether. You can use your fingers to help! Hold up 3 fingers on one hand and 2 on the other โ€” count them all and you get 5. Addition has a special trick: it does not matter which order you add. 3 + 2 is the same as 2 + 3. We call this the commutative property. Practice with small numbers first, then work your way up to sums of 10.

Examples

2 + 3 = 5 (two cats plus three cats = five cats). 4 + 1 = 5. 6 + 4 = 10. Try using blocks or coins to check your answers!

Going Deeper

Try making addition sentences using objects around you. Can you find all the ways to make 10?

๐ŸŽฏ

Addition Book

Make an addition book! On each page, draw two groups of objects (like 3 stars and 4 stars) and write the addition sentence below.
