Introduction to Multiplication

You already know addition. MULTIPLICATION is like addition's faster, smarter cousin. It lets you add the SAME NUMBER over and over, quickly. Instead of 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20, you can just say 4 × 5 = 20. Today you will master this superpower.

What Multiplication Means

3 × 4 means "3 groups of 4" OR "4 groups of 3" — both work!\n\nExample: 3 × 4 = 12\n\nThink of it as:\n- 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 (3 groups of 4)\n- OR 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 (4 groups of 3)\n\nThe answer is called the PRODUCT. The numbers being multiplied are FACTORS.

3 Ways to Solve 6 × 4

**Way 1: Repeated Addition**\n4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 24\n\n**Way 2: Array (Rows and Columns)**\nDraw 6 rows of 4 dots each. Count: 24.\n\n**Way 3: Skip Counting**\nCount by 4s: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 (six times).\n\nAll three give you 24. Pick whichever helps you THINK.

What is 5 × 3?

The Commutative Property

Here's a cool math secret: you can multiply numbers in ANY ORDER and get the same answer.\n\n3 × 4 = 12\n4 × 3 = 12\n\nThis is called the COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY. It means you can pick the EASIER order — whichever is faster for you to remember.

Multiplication in Real Life

You use multiplication EVERY DAY:\n\n- 4 cookies per friend × 5 friends = 20 cookies\n- 7 days in a week × 2 weeks = 14 days\n- $5 allowance × 4 weeks = $20\n- 6 legs per spider × 3 spiders = 18 legs\n\nFinding "how many TOTAL" from EQUAL groups = multiplication.

What is the ANSWER in a multiplication problem called?

🎯

Array Art

1. Get a stack of stickers or dots.\n2. Arrange them in rows and columns (like 4 rows of 5).\n3. Count: how many total?\n4. Write the multiplication: 4 × 5 = 20.\n5. Make 5 different arrays. Record each.

🎯

Times Table Race

1. With a partner, practice your 2s, 5s, and 10s.\n2. One person says "2 × 7" — the other answers fast.\n3. Keep a tally of correct answers in 1 minute.\n4. Practice every day — speed comes from REPETITION.\n5. Once you master 2/5/10, move to 3s and 4s.

If 6 × 4 = 24, what is 4 × 6?
