Jobs People Do

When a firefighter slides down the pole and hops in the big red truck, they are going to help someone! When a baker pulls warm bread out of the oven at 5 in the morning, they are getting ready for your morning toast. Every single day, thousands of different jobs are happening all around you, even while you sleep.

What You'll Learn

- Name at least six different jobs and what each person does - Explain how a job helps other people - Sort jobs by the tools workers use - Describe a job you might want to try someday

Helpers in Your Neighborhood

A doctor listens to your heart with a stethoscope and helps you feel better when you are sick. A teacher reads stories out loud and helps you learn new words. A mail carrier walks or drives from house to house delivering letters and packages. A farmer wakes up before the sun to feed animals and grow the food you eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Each of these jobs uses special tools. The doctor's stethoscope, the teacher's whiteboard marker, the mail carrier's big bag, and the farmer's tractor are all tools that help them do their job well.

Jobs That Build and Fix Things

A carpenter uses a hammer and saw to build houses, tables, and even playgrounds. A plumber fixes pipes so water can flow to your sink and shower. A mechanic listens to a car's engine and figures out what part needs to be fixed. These jobs take practice โ€” a carpenter might build hundreds of birdhouses before building their first big house!

Every Job Helps Someone

A trash collector might seem like a small job, but without them, neighborhoods would pile up with garbage in just one week. Every job, big or small, makes life better for someone else.

Jobs That Keep Us Safe

A firefighter puts out fires and rescues people and pets from danger. A police officer helps keep streets safe and helps people who are lost find their way home. A lifeguard watches the pool or beach closely so swimmers stay safe. These workers often wear special uniforms so you can spot them quickly when you need help.

Match each worker to the tool they use most.
