My Community

A COMMUNITY is a group of people who live close together. They share streets, schools, stores, parks — and often look out for each other. You live in a community right now! Today you will learn what makes a community work and how to be a great member of yours.

Types of Communities

Communities come in all sizes:\n\n- **CITY** — LOTS of people, tall buildings, busy streets (like New York)\n- **TOWN** — smaller, a few thousand people, some main streets\n- **SUBURB** — homes around a city, quieter neighborhoods\n- **RURAL** — farms, big open spaces, fewer people\n\nEach type of community has its own feel. Which one describes YOUR home?

Who Helps in a Community?

A community needs many helpers:\n\n- **TEACHERS** help us learn\n- **POLICE & FIREFIGHTERS** keep us safe\n- **DOCTORS & NURSES** help us stay healthy\n- **GROCERS & FARMERS** give us food\n- **MAIL CARRIERS** bring our letters\n- **BUS DRIVERS** help us travel\n- **GARBAGE COLLECTORS** keep us clean\n\nEvery community needs ALL of these jobs. Each one is important.

What is a COMMUNITY?

Places in a Community

Communities have special PLACES where people meet:\n\n- **Library** — books for everyone\n- **Park** — play, run, picnic\n- **School** — learning\n- **Post Office** — send mail\n- **Fire Station** — keeps us safe\n- **Grocery Store** — food\n- **Place of Worship** — religion\n- **Town Hall** — where leaders meet\n\nCan you name 5 special places in YOUR community?

Being a Good Community Member

Good community members:\n\n- Say hello to neighbors\n- Pick up trash (even if not theirs!)\n- Help people in need\n- Follow community rules\n- Vote when old enough\n- Respect places like parks and libraries\n- Thank helpers (teachers, police, mail carriers)\n\nBeing kind to your community helps EVERYONE.

Which of these is NOT usually a community helper?

🎯

Map Your Community

1. Take a big paper.\n2. Draw your house in the middle.\n3. Add roads, buildings, parks near your home.\n4. Label: school, grocery store, library, park, friend's house.\n5. This is YOUR community map.\n6. Share with family — what did you include? What did you forget?

🎯

Thank a Helper

1. Pick ONE community helper you see often (teacher, mail carrier, bus driver).\n2. Draw them a thank-you picture.\n3. Write: "Thank you for helping our community!"\n4. With a parent, give them the card.\n5. Community helpers often do not hear "thank you." Your card will make their day.

Why is it important for community members to HELP each other?
