Shared Record Books: How Blockchain Keeps Track of Digital Coins

Imagine your class has a big notebook. Every time someone trades a sticker, you write it down: "Maya gave one star sticker to Leo." Every single classmate has their own copy of this notebook. If someone sneaks in at night and erases a trade on THEIR copy โ€” everyone else's copy still says the trade happened. You cannot cheat! That is almost exactly how a blockchain works โ€” but with computers instead of notebooks, and digital coins instead of stickers.

What Is a Blockchain?

A blockchain is a list of records stored on thousands of computers at the same time. Each record is called a block. Every new block is chained โ€” connected โ€” to the block before it. That chain of blocks is why it is called a BLOCKCHAIN! When someone wants to add a new block, all the computers check together: "Does this make sense? Is it real?" Only after most of the computers agree does the block get added forever. This group-checking is called verification.

How Is It Different from a Piggy Bank?

A piggy bank sits at YOUR house. Only you know what is inside. If it breaks and you lose the coins, they are gone forever. A bank keeps records too, but only the BANK knows your balance โ€” you have to trust them to be honest. A blockchain is different from both: โ€ข Thousands of computers ALL keep the same record at the same time. โ€ข No single person or bank is in charge. โ€ข Anyone can look at the public record. โ€ข Once a record is written, changing it is nearly impossible. Bitcoin is a real digital coin that uses a blockchain. Instead of a banker writing your balance in their private book, thousands of computers around the world write it together in a shared book.

Why Is It So Hard to Cheat?

Remember the class notebook? If you changed YOUR copy, all your classmates' copies would still show the true record. Everyone would catch you! Blockchain works the same way. If a cheater tried to change a record on one computer, all the other thousands of computers would see something different and refuse to accept the change. To actually fool a blockchain, a cheater would need to change the record on more than HALF of all the computers at the same moment. With Bitcoin, that means more than half of millions of computers worldwide โ€” nearly impossible!

Bitcoin's Birthday

Bitcoin was invented in 2009 by a mystery person (or group) using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. Nobody knows who Satoshi really is! The very first Bitcoin block, called the Genesis Block, was added on January 3, 2009.

Step 2: Player 1 announces a trade: 'I give 2 stickers to Player 2.' Everyone writes it down as Block 1. Step 3: Player 2 announces: 'I give 1 sticker to Player 3.' Everyone writes: Block 2. Step 4: Now Player 1 secretly CHANGES Block 1 on only their paper โ€” erase it or write something different. Step 5: Everyone holds up their papers and compares. Did everyone catch the cheat? Deliverable: Write 2 sentences about what happened: (1) What did the cheat try to do? (2) How did having many copies stop the cheat? This is how real blockchains protect themselves!
