Digital Coins Explained
Have you ever watched a grown-up tap a phone or a card to pay for something at the store, instead of handing over paper bills and coins? Some money today isn't made of paper or metal at all - it's just numbers stored safely inside computers all over the world. We call this kind of money digital coins, and it works a little differently from the coins in your piggy bank.

What Makes Money 'Digital'?
A penny you can hold in your hand. You can drop it, lose it under the couch, or put it in a jar. A digital coin is different - it isn't a shiny metal circle at all. It's a number that computers agree belongs to you. When you send a digital coin to a friend, no coin actually moves through the mail. Instead, computers around the world update their records to say the number now belongs to your friend instead of you.
A Big Shared Notebook
Imagine a magic notebook that thousands of copies exist of, all around the world, and every copy always says the exact same thing. Every time someone sends a digital coin, that trade gets written down as a new line in the notebook - and every single copy updates at the same time. This shared notebook is called a blockchain, because the pages (called 'blocks') are locked together in order, like a chain. Because there are so many copies in so many places, it's extremely hard for anyone to sneak in and change what the notebook says.
Digital coins are real and people do use them to buy things, but they can change value very quickly - sometimes a coin worth a lot on Monday is worth much less by Friday. Always ask a grown-up before ever using real money, digital or otherwise.
Keeping Your Coins Safe
Think about the key to your house. If you lose it, a stranger could walk right in. Digital coins work the same way, except your 'key' is a very long, very secret code - like a password so complicated that no one could ever guess it. As long as you keep your key secret, your digital coins stay yours. If you ever lose the key, though, there's no locksmith who can make you a new one - the coins are locked away forever.
A Real Digital Coin: Bitcoin
In the year 2009, a person (or maybe a team of people) using the name Satoshi Nakamoto created the very first digital coin, called Bitcoin. Nobody has ever found out Satoshi's real identity! Since then, thousands of computers around the world have kept Bitcoin's shared notebook running every single day, all day, without ever stopping.

Build Your Own Shared Notebook
Grab three friends or family members and four sheets of paper. Each person writes the same three trades at the top of their sheet (for example: 'Sam gives Alex 2 coins,' 'Alex gives Jamie 1 coin,' 'Jamie gives Sam 1 coin'). Now practice adding a new trade: one person announces a new trade out loud, and everyone must write it down on their own sheet at the same time. Compare all four sheets - do they all match? That matching is exactly what a blockchain does, just with computers instead of paper!
