Look outside. A bird flies by. Grass grows. An ant carries a crumb bigger than its head! Every one of these is ALIVE. Scientists have found more than 1 million kinds of animals and plants on Earth. And they keep finding more! There may be 8 million kinds in all. That is a LOT of living things sharing one blue planet.

What Makes Something Alive?
A rock does not eat. A rock does not grow. A rock does not have babies. A rock is NOT alive. A puppy eats food. A puppy grows big. A puppy can have baby puppies. A puppy IS alive! Living things eat, grow, and make more living things like themselves.
Living things need three things: food, water, and air. A toy car does not need any of those. A real cat needs all three!
Life Lives Everywhere
Fish swim deep in the cold ocean. Camels walk in the hot desert sand. Tiny bugs live under snow in freezing places. Life found a way to live in cold spots, hot spots, and even wet spots. Earth is full of homes for living things!
Why Earth Is a Good Home
Earth has water you can drink. Earth has air you can breathe. Earth is not too hot and not too cold. It is just right! That is why so many living things call Earth home.
