Parts of a Building: Walls, Doors, and Roofs

Look around the room you are in right now. Do you see a wall? A door? A window? You are inside a building, and every building is made of parts that each do a job. The people who plan buildings are called architects. They pick where each part goes so the building is safe, cozy, and fun to use.

Walls Hold It Up

Walls are the tall, flat sides of a building. They stand up straight and strong. Walls do two big jobs. They hold up the roof so it does not fall. And they keep the wind and rain outside so you stay dry and warm inside.

Doors and Windows Let You Through

A door is a special part of a wall that opens and shuts. You walk through the door to go in and out. A window is like a see-through part of the wall. It lets sunshine in so the room is bright. Open a window and fresh air comes in too!

The Roof on Top

The roof is the cover on the very top of a building. It is like a big hat for your house. When rain falls, the roof keeps it off your head. Many roofs are pointy so the rain slides right off and drips to the ground. Under the roof and walls is the floor, where you stand and play.
