The Great Pyramid of Giza has stood for over 4,500 years. A tent falls over in a strong wind. What is the difference? Architecture Is Building With a Plan
Anyone can stack blocks, but architecture is the art and science of planning a building before it's built, so that it is safe, useful, and often beautiful. An architect thinks about three big questions: Will it stand up (strength)? Can people use it the way they need to (function)? Does it look good (beauty)? The Roman architect Vitruvius wrote about these same three ideas over 2,000 years ago, and architects still use them today.
Shapes That Hold Weight
Triangles are the strongest simple shape in construction because, unlike a square, a triangle cannot be pushed out of shape without one of its sides actually changing length. This is why you see triangle shapes in bridges, roof frames, and towers, like the steel triangles inside the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Arches are another powerful shape โ a curved arch spreads weight outward and down through its curve, which is how ancient Roman aqueducts carried water for miles without collapsing, some of which still stand today. Domes, which are arches spun in a full circle, cover huge open spaces without needing pillars in the middle, like the dome of the Pantheon in Rome, built around 113-125 CE and still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.
Modern Architecture Uses the Same Old Ideas
Skyscrapers today, like the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (the tallest building in the world at over 828 meters), still rely on triangle-shaped steel bracing hidden inside their walls to resist wind and earthquakes. The oldest tricks โ triangles, arches, and domes โ are still doing the heavy lifting inside the newest buildings on Earth.

Build and Test Three Shapes
Using drinking straws or rolled paper tubes and tape, build three small structures: one using only squares, one using only triangles, and one arch shape. Gently press down on top of each with your hand. Record which shape held the most weight before bending, and write one sentence explaining why, using the word 'rigid' or 'spread weight' from this lesson.
