Your Amazing Body: How Bones, Muscles, and Organs Work Together
Did you know your heart beats about 100,000 times every single day โ even while you sleep? Your body is always working, even when you do not notice it. You have 206 bones, hundreds of muscles, and amazing organs all doing their jobs at once. Let's take a tour inside the most incredible machine you will ever own: YOU.
What You'll Learn
In this lesson you will: - Name the main outside parts of the body - Learn what bones do and how muscles help you move - Discover three important organs: heart, lungs, and stomach - Match each body part to its job
Your Outside Parts
Stand up and look at yourself! Your body has parts you can see and touch. Your HEAD is on top โ it holds your brain, eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Your TORSO is the big middle part, like the trunk of a tree. Connected to your torso are two ARMS and two LEGS. Each finger, toe, elbow, and knee has a special name. Your KNEE is the bending spot in the middle of your leg. Your ELBOW does the same job for your arm. These spots let you bend and move!
Your Bones: The Body's Skeleton
Under your skin is a frame made of 206 bones called your SKELETON. Bones are hard, like little rocks, and they do three important jobs: 1. They hold you up so you do not flop like a jellyfish. 2. They protect soft parts inside โ your skull protects your brain, and your ribs protect your heart and lungs. 3. They work with muscles to help you move. You can feel some bones right now! Touch the hard bump on the back of your head, or feel your kneecap. That is bone!
Babies are born with about 270 bones. As you grow, many bones fuse together until you end up with just 206 by the time you are an adult!
Your Muscles: The Body's Movers
Bones cannot move on their own โ they need muscles! MUSCLES are bundles of stretchy fibers attached to your bones. When a muscle squeezes tight (we say it CONTRACTS), it pulls the bone and you move. Make a fist and bend your arm. Feel that lump near your shoulder? That is your biceps muscle squeezing tight! When you straighten your arm, the muscle relaxes and stretches back out. You have over 600 muscles working every single day.
Inside Your Body: Three Key Organs
An ORGAN is a body part with a special job to do. Here are three important ones: HEART: Your heart is a muscle about the size of your fist. It pumps blood all around your body, delivering oxygen and energy to every cell. Put your hand on your chest and feel it beat! LUNGS: You have two lungs. When you breathe in, air fills your lungs. Your lungs grab the oxygen and pass it to your blood. When you breathe out, you push out used air. STOMACH: Your stomach is a stretchy bag that mashes up the food you eat. Special juices break food into tiny pieces so your body can use the energy.
Match each body part to what it does.

Body Outline Tracing
1. Lie down on a big piece of paper. Have a partner trace around your whole body with a crayon. 2. Stand up and look at your outline. 3. Draw and label at least 6 body parts: head, arm, leg, heart (inside the chest area), lungs (two shapes inside the chest), and stomach (below the lungs). 4. Use a different color to draw 3 bones you know: skull, ribs, and kneecap. 5. Share your drawing and say one fact about each labeled part.
