From Drawing to Real Object
A 3D printer builds objects one thin layer at a time, like stacking hundreds of very thin pancakes on top of each other until they form a shape. Each layer is usually thinner than a credit card โ often around 0.2 millimeters! The printer melts a thin plastic string called filament and squeezes it out through a tiny nozzle, tracing your shape layer after layer until the whole cookie cutter is built, which can take one to two hours for a simple shape.
Why Shape Matters for a Cookie Cutter
A cookie cutter isn't just any shape โ it needs two special features to work. First, the bottom edge that touches the dough must be thin and a little sharp so it cuts cleanly through cookie dough. Second, the walls need to be tall enough (usually about 2-3 centimeters) so you have something to hold onto while you press down. If the walls were too thin, the cutter could snap; if the bottom edge were too thick, it would squish the dough instead of cutting it.
Most beginner 3D designers make their first cookie cutter walls too thin, and they crack. A good beginner wall thickness is about 2 millimeters โ about as thick as two stacked pennies.
Picking Food-Safe Plastic
Not every 3D printing plastic should touch food. PLA plastic, made from cornstarch, is the most common choice for cookie cutters because it's considered low-risk for occasional food contact when kept clean and dry โ though many bakers still place a thin layer of plastic wrap between the cutter and the dough just to be extra safe.
