Major World Religions Overview

RELIGIONS are systems of belief about the sacred, often involving gods, ethics, and rituals. They have shaped every human civilization. Today, FIVE major world religions cover most of humanity. CHRISTIANITY (~2.4 billion adherents). ISLAM (~1.9 billion). HINDUISM (~1.2 billion). BUDDHISM (~500 million). JUDAISM (~15 million but disproportionate cultural influence).

Brief profiles. CHRISTIANITY: based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. ISLAM: founded by Prophet Muhammad in 7th-century Arabia. HINDUISM: ancient Indian traditions, no single founder, complex theology with many gods seen as aspects of one ultimate reality. BUDDHISM: founded by Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) ~5th century BCE, central teachings on ending suffering. JUDAISM: ancient Israelite religion, foundational to Christianity and Islam.
