The Survival Priorities

Lost in the WILDERNESS? Your priorities are clear. Survivalists call them "the Rule of 3s." You can survive about 3 MINUTES without air, 3 HOURS without shelter (in extreme weather), 3 DAYS without water, 3 WEEKS without food. Most wilderness deaths come from EXPOSURE — not predators or starvation. So shelter often beats food. The classic order: SHELTER → WATER → FIRE → FOOD. And before any of that: STAY CALM and signal for rescue.

First steps when lost. (1) STOP. Don't panic. Sit down. Breathe. Most lost people make their situation WORSE by wandering randomly. (2) THINK. Where were you going? When are you expected back? (3) OBSERVE. What's around? Water sources? Shelter spots? (4) PLAN. Stay put if rescue is likely. Move if you must. The acronym STOP (Stop, Think, Observe, Plan) saves lives. Calm decision-making in the first hour matters more than physical strength.

You're lost in the woods at sunset, weather turning cold. What's your FIRST priority?

Prevention beats response. Tell someone your route and expected return time. Carry a SURVIVAL KIT (knife, fire starter, whistle, space blanket, water container, first aid). Bring extra water, snacks, warm layer, headlamp. Know basic skills BEFORE going. Most wilderness emergencies are preventable with planning. The Boy Scouts' "Be Prepared" is genuinely good advice.

🎯

Build a Kit

Make a small wilderness emergency kit: knife or multitool, lighter, space blanket, whistle, snacks, water bottle, small first aid kit. Cost: ~$30. Fits in a backpack pocket. Could save your life.

Wilderness survival is mostly about staying calm, knowing priorities, and being prepared. Most situations are survivable with the right mindset.
