Heat Illness Prevention

In Grand Canyon National Park, heat-related illness is the single most common reason hikers need emergency rescue — more than falls, more than dehydration alone, more than any other cause. Temperatures on the inner-canyon trails regularly top 110°F in summer, and hikers who feel fine at the trailhead can be in a life-threatening emergency within a couple of hours. Knowing the warning signs, and what to do about them, is one of the most important survival skills there is.

How Your Body Cools Itself — and How That Fails

Your body's main cooling system is sweat: as sweat evaporates off your skin, it carries heat away and keeps your core temperature near 98.6°F. This works well in dry heat but breaks down in humid conditions, where sweat can't evaporate efficiently, and it also breaks down when you simply run out of fluid and electrolytes (sodium, potassium) to sweat with. When cooling fails, core temperature climbs, and the body moves through three escalating stages of heat illness.

The Three Stages

Heat cramps come first: painful muscle spasms, usually in the legs or abdomen, caused by electrolyte loss from heavy sweating. Heat exhaustion is next and more serious — heavy sweating, cool and clammy skin, dizziness, nausea, headache, and a fast but weak pulse, with core temperature typically still under 104°F. Heat stroke is the medical emergency: core temperature climbs above 104°F (40°C), and — this is the critical warning sign — the person shows confusion, slurred speech, stumbling, or loses consciousness. In true heat stroke, skin can actually stop sweating and feel hot and dry, because the cooling system has completely failed.

Prevention on the Trail

In extreme heat, hikers should drink roughly 1 liter of water per hour of strenuous activity, paired with electrolytes (sports drinks, electrolyte tablets, or salty snacks) rather than plain water alone, since water without electrolytes can actually worsen cramping. Start hikes before sunrise to avoid peak heat between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing, and take rest breaks in shade every 30 to 45 minutes. Acclimatization matters too — it takes most people 7 to 14 days of gradual heat exposure before their bodies sweat more efficiently and handle heat safely.

Heat Stroke Is a 911 Emergency

If someone shows confusion, slurred speech, or loses consciousness in the heat, call for emergency help immediately and begin rapid cooling — ice water immersion if possible, or wet cloths and fanning while moving them to shade. Every minute of delay at core temperatures above 104°F increases the risk of permanent organ damage.
