Advanced Map Reading

In 2015, a hiker in Washington's Olympic National Forest survived four days lost in dense wilderness by using nothing but a paper topographic map and a compass to relocate a trailhead after his GPS died. Search and rescue teams still train on paper maps for exactly this reason: batteries fail, satellite signal drops in canyons, and screens crack. Reading a topographic map fluently is one of the most durable survival skills there is.

Reading Contour Lines

Contour lines connect points of equal elevation, and the space between two adjacent lines, called the contour interval, is printed in the map's margin โ€” commonly 40 feet on USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle maps. When contour lines sit close together, the terrain is steep; when they spread far apart, the terrain is nearly flat. A set of closed, concentric circles marks a hilltop, while V-shaped contours pointing toward higher ground mark a stream valley or drainage. Every fifth line is usually printed bolder and labeled with its elevation โ€” these are called index contours, and they let you quickly count intervals to find a specific elevation.

True North vs. Magnetic North

A compass needle points to magnetic north, but the grid lines on most topographic maps point to true north (or grid north), and the angle between the two is called declination. Declination is not the same everywhere โ€” it runs close to 0ยฐ in parts of the Midwest, but exceeds 15ยฐ east in parts of Maine and 15ยฐ west in parts of Alaska, and it slowly shifts year to year. To orient a map correctly, you rotate it until the map's north-south grid lines and the compass needle line up, then adjust for the local declination printed in the map's margin, or dial that declination directly into an adjustable baseplate compass.

Declination Drift

Because magnetic north slowly moves, an old map's printed declination value can be off by a degree or more from the current value. Before a serious backcountry trip, check the current declination for your area at NOAA's online calculator rather than trusting a decades-old map margin.

UTM Coordinates and Terrain Association

The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system divides the world into 60 numbered zones and reports position in meters east (easting) and meters north (northing) within a zone, which makes plotting a precise location on a paper map far faster than using latitude and longitude. Search and rescue teams often report a position as a six-digit UTM grid reference, precise to within 100 meters. Beyond coordinates, experienced navigators use terrain association โ€” matching visible features like ridgelines, saddles, and drainages on the ground to the contour patterns on the map โ€” to confirm position continuously, rather than checking coordinates only when lost.

Plot and Report a Route

Using a topographic map of a real local trail area (from a park service website or a printed quadrangle), identify a start point and an end point at least one mile apart. Record the UTM grid reference for both points, calculate the elevation gain or loss between them using the contour interval, and write a three-sentence route description that names at least two terrain features (like a ridge, saddle, or drainage) a hiker would use to confirm they are on course.
