Gross Pathology: What the Eye Can See
Gross pathology means examining an animal's body and organs with the naked eye, without a microscope. During a necropsy โ the animal version of a human autopsy โ a veterinary pathologist checks body condition, examines each organ's size, color, and texture, and looks for abnormalities like an enlarged spleen, a discolored liver, or fluid where there shouldn't be any. A liver that should be smooth and deep reddish-brown but instead looks pale, swollen, and mottled is already a strong clue pointing toward specific diseases like liver fluke infection or toxic poisoning.
Microscopic Pathology: The Cellular Story
Some diseases leave no visible trace to the naked eye and only show up under a microscope. In histopathology, a pathologist takes a thin slice of tissue, stains it (most commonly with a dye combination called hematoxylin and eosin, or H&E stain), and examines individual cells. Healthy intestinal tissue, for example, shows tall, organized finger-like structures called villi and crypts. The veterinarian suspects canine parvovirus, a highly contagious virus first identified in dogs in 1978. A fecal ELISA antigen test confirms the virus within minutes. If the puppy does not survive, a pathologist examining tissue samples would expect to find the virus's signature damage: destruction of the rapidly dividing cells in the intestinal crypts (parvovirus specifically attacks fast-growing cells) and depletion of lymphoid tissue in the lymph nodes and spleen, since immune cells also divide rapidly.
