Designing a Typeface in Glyphs
A finished font like Helvetica or Inter contains hundreds of drawings, one for every letter, number, and symbol, all engineered to line up perfectly no matter what words you type. Professional type designers build these in a program called Glyphs, a Mac app used by foundries and studios worldwide. In this lesson you will learn how a real font moves from a single letter to a working file you can install.
The core idea: in Glyphs, every character lives on its own editing canvas called a 'glyph.' You draw its outline with points and curves, then Glyphs turns those outlines into a font file (.otf) your computer can use.

Start With Two Letters, Not All 26
Experienced designers never start with 'A.' They start with lowercase 'n' and 'o.' The 'n' sets the vertical stems, the arch shape, and the x-height (the height of lowercase letters without ascenders). The 'o' sets the round shapes and how much curves 'overshoot' the baseline, because a perfect circle looks slightly too small next to flat letters. Together, 'n' and 'o' define the DNA that every other letter borrows from.
Drawing With Bezier Curves
In the Glyphs edit view you place nodes and drag handles to shape smooth curves called Bezier paths. A curve's steepness is controlled by its handles: pull them longer and the curve bulges more. Type designers keep handle angles consistent so the 'o' in a font matches the bowl of the 'b' and 'd'. Glyphs shows a red-and-green overlay if a curve is off-balance, warning you before it becomes a lumpy letter.
In Glyphs you can build 'b' by reusing the 'o' bowl plus the 'l' stem as linked components. Fix the 'o' later and the 'b', 'd', 'p', and 'q' all update automatically. This is why editing one shape can improve dozens of glyphs at once.
Spacing: The Invisible Half of the Job
A beautiful letter spaced badly reads terribly. Each glyph has two side spaces called sidebearings (left and right). Glyphs measures these so 'nn' has even gaps and 'oo' does not look cramped. Designers also add 'kerning' for tricky pairs like 'VA' or 'To', nudging specific letters closer so gaps look even to the eye. A font with 500 glyphs may need thousands of kerning pairs.
From Drawing to Installable File
When the letters and spacing are done, you choose File > Export in Glyphs and pick OpenType (.otf). Glyphs compiles your outlines, metrics, and kerning into one font file. Double-click it, click Install, and your custom typeface appears in every app on the computer. That is the same pipeline used to ship commercial fonts.

Sketch and Spec Your Lowercase 'n' and 'o'
On graph paper (or a tablet drawing app), draw a lowercase 'n' and 'o' for a font of your own. Mark the baseline and x-height with two horizontal lines. Make the 'o' rise slightly ABOVE and dip slightly BELOW those lines to show overshoot. Then draw 'nn' and 'oo' side by side and adjust the gaps until the spacing looks even. Write one sentence explaining what mood your letters have (friendly, sharp, elegant) and which shape choice creates it.
