Cause and Effect Chains: Reading How Systems Work

When a nonfiction article says 'overfishing led to a drop in shark populations, which caused an increase in rays, which then wiped out the local scallop industry,' it is describing a chain of cause and effect โ€” a system. Skilled readers do not just remember each fact separately. They trace how one event triggers the next, spotting patterns called feedback loops that news articles, science reports, and textbooks rely on to explain complicated topics.

Signal Words That Point to Cause and Effect

Strong nonfiction readers watch for signal words that mark cause and effect: because, therefore, as a result, which led to, consequently, due to, and this triggers. When you spot one of these phrases, pause and ask: what is the cause here, and what is the effect? A single sentence can even contain several of these links strung together, one after another.

Chains vs. Feedback Loops

A cause-effect chain moves in one direction: Event A causes Event B, which causes Event C. A feedback loop happens when the final effect loops back and changes the original cause. A reinforcing loop makes the original cause even stronger โ€” like a wildfire that dries out nearby wood, making that wood burn even more easily, which spreads the fire faster. A balancing loop pushes things back toward stability โ€” like a thermostat, where a room getting too hot turns on the air conditioner, which cools the room, which turns the air conditioner back off.

Real Example

A well-known account of Yellowstone National Park describes how reintroducing wolves in 1995 reduced elk grazing, which let willow trees regrow along riverbanks, which gave beavers building material, which created new ponds for fish. That is five linked causes and effects in a single system, described in just one sentence.

Mapping a System While You Read

As you read a passage describing a system, jot down each cause and effect as a short arrow chain โ€” Event 1 -> Event 2 -> Event 3 โ€” in the margin or a notebook. When you finish, check whether the last effect connects back to the very first cause. If it does, you are looking at a feedback loop. If the chain simply ends, you are looking at a straight cause-effect chain.

Find or reread a short nonfiction paragraph (science, news, or social studies) that describes at least three linked events. Write out the chain using arrows, such as Event 1 -> Event 2 -> Event 3, label each arrow with the signal word the author used, and write one sentence saying whether the passage describes a straight chain or a feedback loop.
