Reading the Numbers: Making Sense of Data in What You Read
A headline shouts: "New Snack Cuts Cavities by 50%!" Sounds amazing, right? But 50% of what? If only 2 kids out of 4 in a tiny test got fewer cavities, that 50% suddenly means almost nothing. Learning to read is not just about words. Real reading means understanding the numbers, charts, and statistics packed into articles, ads, and news. This skill, sometimes called quantitative literacy, protects you from being fooled and helps you find the truth.

Percent of What?
A percentage is a piece out of 100. "30% of students" means 30 out of every 100. But a percentage alone can hide the real size. Example: "Sales jumped 200%!" sounds huge. But if a shop sold 1 sandwich yesterday and 3 today, that IS a 200% increase, even though it is only 2 extra sandwiches. Always ask: 200% of what starting number? The base changes everything.
Reading a Chart in Three Steps
When you meet a chart, do not panic. Read it in order: 1. Read the TITLE. What is this chart about? 2. Read the AXIS LABELS. What do the bottom and side measure, and in what units (dollars, years, people)? 3. Find the TREND. Is the line going up, down, or staying flat? What is the biggest or smallest value? A graph titled "City Rainfall 2020-2024" with years across the bottom and inches up the side is telling a weather story. Once you know the axes, the shape of the line tells you the rest.
Tricks That Fool Your Eyes
Numbers can be honest but presented to mislead. Watch for these: - A bar chart whose bottom starts at 90 instead of 0 makes a tiny difference look gigantic. - An "average" can hide extremes: if four people earn 20 dollars and one earns 500, the average of 116 dollars describes nobody in the room. - Cherry-picking means showing only the years that support a claim and hiding the rest.
Correlation Is Not Causation
Just because two things rise together does not mean one caused the other. Ice cream sales and shark attacks both go up in summer. Ice cream does not cause shark attacks; hot weather brings more people to the beach AND more people buying ice cream. When a text claims A caused B, ask: could a third thing be causing both? Could it just be a coincidence? Good readers demand real evidence, not just two lines moving together.
A claim like "this test is 99% accurate" still misses a lot if the thing it tests for is rare. Always ask how big the group was and how common the thing being measured actually is before you trust a bold percentage.

Fact-Check a Real Headline
Find a news headline or ad that uses a number, percentage, or chart (online, in a paper, or on a package). Write down: (1) the exact claim, (2) the question 'percent or increase of WHAT?', (3) whether the base number is given, and (4) whether the claim confuses correlation with causation. Finish with one sentence saying whether you trust the claim and why. Bring your analysis to share.
