What Is Hydrology?
HYDROLOGY is the science of WATER on Earth — how it moves, where it goes, how much there is. Water is essential to all life and most human activity (drinking, agriculture, industry, transportation). Hydrologists study rivers, lakes, groundwater, glaciers, and the water cycle. Their work guides cities, farmers, and disaster responders.
Key concepts. WATERSHED: the area of land that drains to one river or lake. RUNOFF: water flowing across the surface after rain. INFILTRATION: water soaking into the ground. AQUIFER: underground rock layer that holds groundwater. EVAPOTRANSPIRATION: water leaving plants and soil for the atmosphere. DISCHARGE: how much water flows past a point in a river. RECHARGE: groundwater being replenished from above.

Modern challenges. CLIMATE CHANGE alters rainfall patterns — droughts and floods both intensify. POPULATION growth strains supplies. AGRICULTURE uses 70% of human water use. Modern hydrology combines satellite data, computer models, and traditional measurement to forecast and manage water.
