Using Numbers to Win Arguments: Statistics in Debate
In 1998, tobacco companies were forced to pay out $206 billion after decades of downplaying health risks โ a case largely won by lawyers who did not just say smoking was dangerous, they proved it with decades of statistics. In competitive debate, the same rule holds: 'a lot of people agree with me' loses to '73% of surveyed experts agree, according to a 2019 study of 4,200 participants.' Learning to find, use, and question statistics is one of the most powerful skills in argumentation.

Why 'Some People Say' Loses to Real Numbers
Compare two debate statements: 'A lot of teenagers feel stressed about school' versus 'According to a 2023 American Psychological Association survey of over 3,000 teens, 76% reported school as a significant source of stress.' The second version gives a judge something concrete to weigh โ a named source, a year, a sample size, and an exact percentage. Judges and audiences trust claims they can trace back to somewhere real.
Checking If a Statistic Deserves Trust
Before using any statistic in an argument, a strong debater checks three things: Sample size โ a survey of 30 people proves far less than a survey of 3,000. Source โ a statistic from a peer-reviewed university study carries more weight than one from an anonymous blog post or a company selling something related to the claim. Date โ a statistic from 2005 about smartphone use is almost meaningless today, since technology and behavior change fast.
Ice cream sales and drowning deaths both rise in the summer โ but ice cream doesn't cause drowning. Both are caused by a third factor: hot weather bringing more people to the beach. A skilled debater is always ready to ask, 'does this statistic actually prove X causes Y, or could something else explain the pattern?'
How to Respond When an Opponent Misuses a Statistic
When an opponent cites a statistic, the strongest response is not just 'that's wrong' โ it's a specific challenge: 'Where is that number from, and what year? Was the sample size large enough to represent the whole group? Does the statistic actually support the conclusion they're drawing, or just something that sounds similar?' In real competitive debate, this kind of cross-examination question has ended entire arguments when an opponent couldn't answer where their number came from.
