Understanding Our Government

Have you ever wondered who makes the rules for cities and countries? Who decides things like how schools work, or where to build a new park? That is the **government**. A government is a group of people who work together to help everyone live well.

Why do we need rules?

Think about your classroom. There are rules like "take turns" and "don't run in the hallway." Rules help everyone stay safe and be fair. A country is just a very big classroom! Governments make rules (called **laws**) to help lots of people live together.

Why do we need rules and laws?

Who is in the government?

In the United States, these people work in the government:\n\n🇺🇸 **The President** — the leader of the whole country.\n\n🏛️ **Congress** — a big group of people who write laws.\n\n⚖️ **Judges** — people who decide if rules are being followed.\n\n🏘️ **Mayors** — leaders of cities.\n\n🏫 **Governors** — leaders of states.\n\nGrown-ups **vote** to choose who will do these jobs. Voting means picking the person you think will do the best job.

What does "voting" mean?

You can help too!

Even though you can't vote yet, you are already part of your community! You can:\n\n- Follow classroom rules\n- Help take care of parks and streets (pick up trash!)\n- Talk about what you think is fair\n- Learn about how your country works\n\nBeing a good citizen (C3 D2.Civ.1.K-2) starts now. When you're a grown-up, you can vote and help make rules too.

🎯

Classroom vote

With your class or family, vote on something fun! Ideas: what snack to have, which game to play, which book to read together. Count the votes. The choice with the most votes wins. Talk about: how did it feel to pick? How did it feel when your choice won or lost? That's how voting works in big elections too!

🎯

Find your leader

Ask a grown-up to help you find out: Who is the mayor of your town? Who is the president of the United States right now? Draw a picture of one of these leaders and tell a grown-up something about the job they do.

Who writes the laws for our country?

Government might seem like something only grown-ups do, but it's about all of us! Every rule, every park, every school is shaped by people making choices together. Learning how this works helps you be a strong, caring citizen when you grow up.
