Reading a Building: How Architects Use Observation and Interviews

In the early 1970s, architect William H. Whyte spent years filming people in New York City public plazas, recording exactly where they sat, where they stood, and where they actively avoided. His key finding: people chose spots with movable chairs, nearby food, and sunlight โ€” and avoided open, windswept concrete paving with fixed benches. New York City rewrote its zoning code based on his observations. Buildings and spaces that feel 'right' do not happen by accident. They come from carefully studying how people actually live and move through space.

What Are Qualitative Methods in Architecture?

Architectural research divides into two broad categories: Quantitative research uses numbers: floor areas in square meters, structural load calculations, energy consumption in kilowatt-hours, daily occupancy counts. It answers 'how much' and 'how many.' Qualitative research uses observation, language, and lived experience: How does a hospital lobby feel at rush hour? Do employees actually use that stairwell or silently avoid it? Why do office workers eat lunch at their desks instead of the new cafeteria that cost $2 million to build? It answers 'how' and 'why.' Both methods are necessary. A hospital might measure patient recovery times (quantitative) while also interviewing nurses about which room layouts make their work harder (qualitative). The combination consistently produces better buildings than either approach used alone.

Behavioral Observation and Space Syntax

Behavioral observation is exactly what it sounds like: an architect or researcher watches and records how people use a space without intervening. Behavior mapping annotates a floor plan to show where people sit, stand, walk, and gather at different times of day. Whyte used time-lapse film in the 1970s. Modern versions use anonymized pedestrian-tracking software or heat-map overlays on security camera feeds. Space syntax is a method developed at University College London in the 1970s by Bill Hillier. It analyzes visual connectivity โ€” what you can see from any given point in a building โ€” to predict where people will naturally go. A 'well-integrated' space has short visual paths to many other areas; people navigate there instinctively. A 'segregated' space feels hidden or awkward; people avoid it or get lost trying to find it. Shadow tracking has a researcher follow an individual user through a building unobtrusively, recording every route taken, every pause, every moment of confusion. It is widely used in hospital design to identify unnecessary travel that exhausts nursing staff.

The Hawthorne Effect: Observation Changes Behavior

When people know they are being watched, they behave differently than they normally would. This is called the Hawthorne Effect, named after a 1920s factory productivity study in Chicago. Architects and researchers counter it by observing unobtrusively (from a distance or using anonymized sensors) and by observing long enough that subjects stop self-monitoring and return to natural behavior.

Interviews and Surveys: Hearing Directly from Users

Observation tells you what people do; interviews reveal why. Semi-structured interviews are the most common format. The architect prepares key questions in advance but allows the conversation to develop naturally, following unexpected threads. Unlike a rigid survey, a semi-structured interview can discover things the researcher did not think to ask about. Focus groups bring 6โ€“10 users together to discuss a building collectively. They are especially useful for community centers, schools, and housing projects where many different groups share the same spaces. Group dynamics often surface shared frustrations that individuals would not think to mention on their own. Surveys scale qualitative insights to larger populations. The Post-Occupancy Evaluation standard survey asks occupants about thermal comfort, acoustic privacy, spatial adequacy, and sense of belonging โ€” each rated on a scale but with open-text fields inviting explanation. Key principles for architectural interviews: - Ask open-ended questions. 'Walk me through your morning from when you arrive' yields far more than 'Is the entrance convenient?' - Listen without defending the design โ€” users may criticize choices the architect is most proud of. - Interview diverse users. A wheelchair user, a night-shift worker, and a five-year-old child reveal very different things about the identical building.

Post-Occupancy Evaluation: Learning After the Building Is Built

Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) is a structured study of a building conducted 6โ€“24 months after occupants have moved in. The central question: does it actually work as designed? POE was formalized in the 1960s in direct response to public housing failures โ€” buildings that performed well on paper made residents deeply miserable in practice. A full POE combines surveys, interviews, behavioral observation, and technical measurements such as indoor temperature, CO2 levels, and acoustic decibel readings. The results feed back into the firm's future projects, creating an institutional memory of what works. Some public clients โ€” including the UK's National Health Service โ€” now require POE completion as a condition of receiving final payment. One landmark POE finding: most open-plan offices built in the 1990s and 2000s, designed specifically to increase collaboration, actually reduced face-to-face interaction by 70%. Workers retreated into headphones and email to compensate for the loss of acoustic privacy (Harvard Business School study, 2018). This finding has shifted many firms back toward hybrid layouts that include enclosed meeting rooms alongside open work areas.

Choose a space in your school that multiple people use: a hallway junction, a cafeteria, a library, or a common room. Spend 15 minutes observing it without participating in any activity there.
